Carters by the sea is the perfect location to stay a few days and experience what the Westcoast Northern beaches have to offer. We are 15 minutes from the famed Cape Foulwind Seal Colony, 40 minutes from the famous Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki and 80 minutes from Karamea with the Oparara Arches and Scotts Beach at the start of the Heaphy Track. We also have walking/biking trails at Charming Creek, the Denniston Plateau and the newly formed Old Ghost Road cycling trail all within 40 minutes from Carters Beach.

The newly formed 55km Kawatiri Coastal Cycle Trial from Westport to Charleston passes across the front of our property.

Carters Beach is great for walking, bike riding, swimming, fishing and kite flying. It has a temperate climate and is one of the 3 well-known northern West Coast beaches. Located just a few minutes north from Cape Foulwind and Tauranga Bay. A lovely relaxing stopover between the glaciers and Nelson.

Cape Foulwind Walkway and Seal Colony Walk

14min drive from Carters by the Sea (12.1km)
A newly identified NZ Great Short Walk, the Cape Foulwind Walkway has panoramic views of mountains and spectacular coastal views. An excellent track to the viewing platform overlooking the Tauranga Bay Seal Colony allows wheelchair access and is an easy 10 minute walk and a further 30 minutes to the lighthouse one way.

The Charming Creek Walkway

52min drive from Carters by the Sea (55.1km)
Newly identified as a Great NZ Short Walk, Charming Creek is a 3 hour (one way walk) from Ngakawau (30 minutes North of Westport) to Seddonville through a spectacular forested gorge following an old private railway line (with various tunnels) established in 1914. A scenic highlight is a 2 hour return walk to the Ngakawau River Suspension Bridge giving an unfolding view of the beautiful Mangatini Falls.

The Denniston Historic Area

Visit the dramatic location of the West Coast's famous coal mining history on top of the Denniston Historic Plateau. The Grade 1 Heritage site has wonderful interpretation panels showcasing historic stories and research about the area from 1880, all just 30 minutes from Westport.

The Old Ghost Road Trail is a Grade 4 (advanced) cycle/walking trail following a long forgotten gold miners road from Seddonville to Lyell and traverses native forest, alpine tops and passes through seven ghost towns.
